With the election of City Councilor Lacey Beaty as Mayor of Beaverton effective January 1, 2021, Beaverton City Councilor Position 1 became vacant.
On January 12, 2021, the Beaverton City Council adopted Resolution No. 4699 declaring City Councilor Position 1 vacant as of January 1, 2021, and calling for a Special Election on May 18, 2021, to fill that position. This position is elected at-large, to fill a partial term of office that expires December 31, 2022.
Beaverton residents interested in running for City Council must be 18 years of age by the election date, must be a qualified elector of the state, and must have lived in the Beaverton city limits for at least six months immediately prior to the election date.
A Candidate’s Filing Handbook, containing instructions and forms to run for Council, will be available on the city’s Website beginning February 6, 2021, at www.BeavertonOregon.gov. A hard copy can be obtained by calling the City Recorder/Elections Office at 503-526-2495 or e-mailing email@example.com.
Candidates must file a Prospective Petition for Nomination signature form with the City Elections Officer prior to circulating the petition for signatures, Once approved, the petition may be circulated for signatures. The petition must be signed by not fewer than 10 and not more than 20 qualified voters in the city of Beaverton, and must specify that the candidate is filing for City Councilor Position 1. Once signatures are obtained, the petition is filed with the City Elections Officer.
Candidates should allow time for the signature verification process prior to the filing deadline. The City Elections Officer will submit the petitions to the County Elections Office for signature verification and notify the candidate of the results. If it is determined there are not enough valid signatures and the filing deadline has not passed, the candidate may submit additional signatures.
The Filing Deadline is Thursday, March 18, 2021, at 5:00 p.m.
If the Special Election results in one candidate receiving a majority of all the votes cast for all candidates for City Councilor Position 1, then that candidate shall be sworn into office after the election results are certified by the City Council and will serve the unexpired term of office, until December 31, 2022. If no candidate receives a majority, then a run-off election shall be held between the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes at the election that is next available pursuant to state law (currently scheduled as September 21, 2021).
