Beaverton City Library is pleased to announce that Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson is the selection for the third annual One Book, One Beaverton. Stevenson’s book is a moving memoir and exposé about our deeply flawed criminal justice system and one man’s fight to defend our country’s most vulnerable and poor.
As a young lawyer spurred by his dedication to justice and mercy, Stevenson co-founded the Equal Justice Initiative, which works to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment, and racial inequality. The book chronicles his steadfast commitment to these ideals as he defends clients who have been wrongfully convicted or excessively punished.
Nicholas Kristof of The New York Times calls Just Mercy “a searing, moving, and infuriating memoir … Bryan Stevenson may, indeed, be America’s Mandela.” The book has been a #1 New York Times bestseller and was recently made into a movie starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx.
During the month of January, the library will host a series of related special events. We will begin giving out complimentary copies of the book beginning Saturday, Nov. 14, at an outdoor book giveaway. For more details, please visit www.BeavertonLibrary.org/1book.
